Recap from episode 31

In episode 31 of The Shop Management Show, I was thrilled to be joined by Alan Beech, President of Beech Consulting.

Alan and I discussed:

  • Adopting an open mindset for industry change
  • Evolving the direction of your shop
  • Financial considerations for emerging tech
  • And much more

Let’s recap some episode highlights.

Keeping up on industry trends

As a shop owner, you have your hands full! Keeping up with the latest industry news and evolving trends can take time.

But you can still find creative ways to stay in touch with these developments. Alan recommends becoming a part of trade associations or performance groups. Or join a national organization that aligns with your shop’s values. When you have a community, you can share updates back and forth.

Additionally, Alan mentions there are plenty of fantastic industry resources available. Find extra time to listen to podcasts, read articles, and tap into the automotive industry news cycle. Keeping up will help you stay on top of new regulations and adjust your shop’s approach as the market changes.

The value of consistent staff training

Alan reminds us that techs can’t excel long-term without quality business support and external input.

While you may make it through a year unscathed with that approach, he says it will eventually catch up to your business and prove costly.

Instead, Alan recommends the following:

  • Focus on the success of your technicians
  • Require they complete regular training
  • Enable them with quality equipment
  • Create a healthy shop environment

Easier said than done, right? But investing time, money, and resources in each area will generate a positive chain reaction for your auto repair business. Your staff will stick around and deliver quality work. In turn, customers will appreciate the positive attitudes they observe in your shop and the quality service you provide.
