Recap from episode 30

In episode 30 of The Shop Management Show, I was thrilled to be joined by Alan Beech, President of Beech Consulting.

Alan and I discussed:ย

  • State of auto repair in 2024
  • Educating your shop on EVs
  • Leveraging support as you learn
  • And much more

Letโ€™s cover some key moments in the episode.ย

Preparing your shop for technology trends

Alan says that although the auto repair industry isnโ€™t seeing electric vehicles (EVs) go mainstream quite yet, that doesnโ€™t mean it will remain that way.ย

He recommends that shop owners remain proactive on this front. Educate your business on EVs and emerging technologies. Invest in training for your team. Additionally, start preparing service advisors at your front counter to have these conversations with customers.ย

But what about learning how to repair these vehicles? Alan recommends you invest in a used EV that will require regular maintenance and repairs. Begin to study these needs and the costs associated with them. Learn everything you can, and get your team involved in the education process.ย

While it may sound unnecessary now, this is an important step. First, it prepares your shop for whatโ€™s to come. But it also conveys to customers that your business takes emerging technologies seriously.ย

Leveraging support as you develop hands-on EV experience

So, you invest in a used EV and are ready to gain some hands-on experience. But Alan provides a word of caution before you get started: prioritize taking a safety course to understand the essentials of EV safety.ย

With that detail accounted for, there are other measures you should take. You will undoubtedly run into unique repair situations where you wonโ€™t have the answer. Alan recommends establishing a safety net for these situations.ย

Find a technical group with specialized skills working on EVs. Join a reputable network. Invest some time and money into these resources. That way, you can always pick up the phone when you have a question before proceeding with a repair.
