How to Become an AAA Approved Auto Repair Shop: Requirements and Application Guide

What Is the AAA Approved Auto Repair (AAR) Program? 

The AAA Approved Auto Repair (AAR) program is a network of trusted auto repair shops endorsed by AAA. It has more than 7000 approved repair facilities across the US and Canada. 

Independently owned and operated mechanical and collision repair facilities are eligible to apply. These shops must be licensed, insured and operating legally. Also, meet AAA criteria for quality repairs, customer service, and professionalism. 

Auto repair shops apply through a local or regional AAA club, not through a single national application portal. This program is different from the AAA Direct Repair Program, which focuses on insurance claim repairs (covered later in the FAQ).

Technician Certifications

Before applying, the shops must meet all AAA requirements. Ensure that all technicians performing repairs have current ASE certification as per their expertise. Ongoing certifications help stay in line with industry standards. Another requirement is to hire at least one ASE Certified Master Technician. 

AAA representatives interview technicians during inspection. They verify knowledge and skills used to meet quality repairs. 

Parts, Equipment, and Facility Standards

AAA expects approved repair facilities to use high-quality, professional-grade replacement parts. These may include OEM parts or equivalent parts from reputable manufacturers, provided they meet AAA’s quality standards and are appropriate for the repair. 

The repair shop must have modern diagnostic equipment to service and repair modern vehicles. 

AAA inspects essential repair tools, including ratchets, impact wrenches, alignment equipment, and specialty tools. 

Besides this, the shop should have a clean, professional customer waiting area. The area should be kept separate from service bays. The shop must also follow environmental regulations. Properly dispose of used oil, fluids and other automotive waste.

Customer Service and Business Standards

Auto repair shops applying for AAA status must have a customer satisfaction rate of approximately 90% or higher. After approval, AAA directly surveys customers to double-check. They also check: 

• Customers received written repair estimates. 
• The final auto repair receipt didn’t exceed 10% of the estimate. Not without proper customer approval. 

Repair shops need to meet business standards as well. They should have been operating for more than a year. They need a minimum “A” rating from the Better Business Bureau. Shop repairs must have at least one 24-month/24,000-mile parts and labor warranty. 

AAA members receive a 10% discount (up to $50) on qualifying services. Shop agrees to binding arbitration with AAA if customer disputes are not resolved. 

The AAA Approval Application Process: 4 Steps

Auto shops need to go through a multi-step process. Each step must be followed carefully for approval:

Step 01: Conduct a Self-Assessment 

Check the AAA-Approved Auto Repair Facility Requirements table above. Compare your shop against each requirement. Run through what requirements are already covered. If your technicians already have a certification, that’s a plus.

Your shop works with OEM parts only, which is another check. Similarly, go through customer service, business standards and other approval requirements and check off which are already practiced. 

Next, identify gaps and list out requirements that need to be completed. It is easier to first complete all requirements and then apply. Submitting without completing requirements will only delay the approval process with follow-up inspections. 

Step 02: Submit an Application 

You need to apply through the AAA regional club. Before you apply, know your local club. Use AAA’s ZIP code lookup to identify your shop region. This is important because eligibility requirements and submission methods vary for different regions. 

AAA Club Alliance accepts online applications for shops located in Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Oklahoma, South Dakota, and parts of Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Kansas. 

AAA ACE (Automobile Club Enterprises) ask interested repair facilities to contact the club directly. They do not require submitting a universal online application. 

Step 03: Facility Inspection and Review 

After application submission, an  AAA Approved Auto Repair Field Specialist visits the shop. They inspect the shop, tools and equipment used and how repair processes are conducted.

They also interview technicians and ask about their qualifications. They may return multiple times over days, weeks, or months to review and analyze processes and business records. 

Step 04: Certification and Ongoing Compliance 

The auto shop receives AAA certification after approval. They can display the AAA Approved Auto Repair logo. They are also eligible for directory listings and towing referrals. To maintain the certification, shops must continue to meet the AAA standard through ongoing compliance. 

What AAA Inspectors Actually Look For 

An AAA inspector does a thorough review of your shop’s daily operations. That’s why they can visit multiple times to ensure all requirements are met. Here’s what they look for: 

1. Shop appearance: They inspect the cleanliness and professional presentation of the customer waiting area and bays. 
2. Equipment and tools: Diagnostic equipment and repair tools in the shop are up to date. They check that these are well-maintained and can efficiently service modern vehicles.
3. Technician credential verification: They see ASE certificates and ask mechanics directly about qualifications.
4. Customer satisfaction history: They review customer satisfaction records and how the shop handles complaints or issues. 
5. Environmental compliance: They review waste disposal practices, safety procedures, and related documentation. 
6. Inspection timeline: Some auto shops receive approval after the first visit. In contrast, other shops may be visited more than once. 

Maintaining Your AAA Approval After Certification 

Receiving AAA approval is only the start. Auto repair shops must continue to meet AAA standards and keep their status intact. To maintain AAA approval, ensure the points below are met:

• Annual recertification: AAA regularly reviews approved repair facilities. Based on this, they recertify annually after confirmation that requirements are met. 
• Customer satisfaction: They continuously track and monitor customer feedback and their satisfaction. 
• ASE certifications: Technicians’ certifications must remain current. Even if one certification is missed, it can trigger noncompliance. 
• Equipment and facilities: Diagnostic equipment, tools, and the shop environment should be kept up to standard.

Auto repair shops failing to meet AAA standards can be at risk of losing Approved Auto Repair status. They can lose directory listings and towing referral opportunities.
